Former United States President Donald Trump recently made a bold statement that could have a significant impact on the future of digital currencies in the U.S. During a rally in New Hampshire, he vowed to block the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) if he returns to office.
A firm stance against digital currency
Donald Trump clearly expressed his opposition to the creation of an entirely digital version of the U.S. dollar by the Federal Reserve (Fed). This declaration comes as the Fed continues to study the technical feasibility of such an initiative. However, the prospect of a publicly accessible digital dollar seems to be becoming politically toxic, with figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also voicing their opposition.

The stakes of CBDC
A CBDC is essentially a cryptocurrency controlled by a country’s central bank, pegged to a national fiat currency. Unlike standard cryptocurrencies, a CBDC would be under complete state control, raising questions about privacy and economic freedom. Trump labeled such an initiative a “dangerous threat to freedom,” highlighting concerns regarding government surveillance and control over citizen spending.
The FED’s position
Although the Federal Reserve has not yet decided to create a digital version of the dollar, it has conducted research indicating that it would be technically possible. Jerome Powell, the chair of the Fed, specified that the bank would not take this step without explicit approval from Congress and the executive branch.
Trump’s statement reveals a growing political divide in the United States concerning the future of digital currencies and CBDC. While some see CBDC as an inevitable technological evolution, others, like Trump and DeSantis, view it as a potential tool for government surveillance and control, running counter to the principles of individual liberty.
