Brazil launches blockchain-based ID card

Beyond financial transactions, Blockchain technology stands out for its intelligence, completeness and innovative functionalities. Thanks to its many advantages, Brazil has decided to adopt national identity cards based on Blockchain technology. It will enhance the security and improve the efficiency of its national identification system. The first states to adopt this new approach are Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Paraná.

First stage of the project: implementing blockchain technology

The new ID cards will be issued using a private blockchain developed by Serpro, Brazil’s national data processing service. The country plans to issue identity documents using blockchain technology by November 6. Alexandre Amorim, President of Serpro, believes that blockchain’s immutability and decentralization make it an ideal technology for this type of identification.

  • Immutability: This technology guarantees document integrity. It prevents any unauthorized modification of the information contained.
  • Decentralization: Data is protected from attack or tampering. This is because information is distributed across several network nodes, without any centralizing body.

Objectives of the digital identity card project

The local government believes that this project is essential to strengthening the fight against organized crime. It also facilitates collaboration between different government sectors. The new digital identity cards will make it possible to :

  • Simplifying access to services: Brazilian citizens will no longer need to present several documents when requesting services from public authorities. The new digital identity card will bring together all the necessary information.
  • Streamline administrative records: thanks to blockchain, it will be possible to eliminate duplicates and errors in government databases. Different agencies will also be able to share information securely and transparently.
  • Fighting fraud: The use of blockchain technology will make it much more difficult to falsify identity documents and create fictitious identities.

A focus on personal data security

The protection of personal data is a growing concern for citizens and governments worldwide. The use of blockchain for this digital identification initiative aims to ensure better data protection for Brazilians. What’s more, blockchain technology offers a more secure digital experience.

New features for Brazilian digital identity cards

The blockchain-based national ID card project brings several changes compared to traditional ID cards.

  • Fingerprints: The new cards will also include the person’s fingerprints. Thanks to the use of biometric technology, identity verification is fast and accurate.
  • Multi-stage authentication: Increased security. Authentication follows precise steps.
  • Anti-copy technology: The blockchain will prevent unauthorized duplication of the data contained in new identity documents.

Conclusion

Brazil is firmly committed to modernizing its national identification system. The country is taking advantage of the benefits offered by blockchain technology. This initiative is likely to reinvigorate confidence in the administrative tools made available by the country. In addition, it facilitates the daily lives of its inhabitants while protecting their personal data.
