Blockchain technology from Téléfónica and Nova Labs to revolutionise mobile infrastructure in Mexico

In a world where mobile connectivity has become essential, telecoms giant Téléfónica, in collaboration with Nova Labs, is turning to blockchain to revolutionise mobile infrastructure in Mexico. The initiative aims to reduce infrastructure costs and extend mobile coverage, particularly in remote areas.

Téléfónica and Nova Labs: An innovative partnership

Téléfónica and Nova Labs announced their partnership on 24 January for the deployment of Helium mobile hotspots in Mexico City and Oaxaca. These hotspots, operating as nodes, will provide wireless network coverage for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. By integrating Helium's decentralised network, Téléfónica will be able to extend its coverage. At the same time, it will be able to offer better connectivity, even during periods of heavy use. This innovative approach shows how telecommunications companies can integrate blockchain technology to improve their services.

Blockchain for connectivity

The use of blockchain in this partnership brings a new dimension to the management of telecommunications networks. By using blockchain technology, Téléfónica and Nova Labs can create a decentralised network that is more secure and transparent. Helium hotspots will offer a reliable alternative to traditional mobile infrastructures. This is particularly beneficial in areas where coverage is limited or non-existent. This initiative could well change the way mobile services are deployed and managed. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency.

Benefits and prospects of the initiative

This collaboration will enable users to benefit from improved connectivity thanks to decentralised technology. When a device is near a Helium hotspot, it will be able to switch from Téléfónica's traditional cellular network to the Helium network, making it easier to manage data traffic. José Haro, Managing Director of Téléfónica's wholesale division, stresses the importance of this programme for measuring performance and customer satisfaction, with the ambition of integrating it into their portfolio of mobile networks in different countries in the region. This partnership illustrates how blockchain technology can be used to enhance existing services by exploring new avenues for mobile connectivity.
