NFTs are cryptocurrencies that have special characteristics that make them unique and not exchangeable ‘like for like’ with other cryptocurrencies. While they are often associated with JPEGs of apes and other humorous content, the underlying technology has the potential to fundamentally disrupt the art and auctions industries.
While the global NFT market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) or 33% over the next decade, the share of NFT revenues in fine arts auctions is just 0,1%. The global art market is on the verge of major disruption and the creators of techCannes : Le Gala are excited to share this innovation with their prestigious guests.
Blockchain technology’s core features solve many of the inefficiencies that plague the art industry and present barriers to entry for everyday investors:
- It is an open ledger that is fully transparent, allowing anyone to access the full transaction history of the assets registered on it;
- It is immutable: once information is entered and validated, it cannot be modified or deleted, thus protecting against tampering, fraud, and theft;
- Settlement times are very quick: on most blockchains, assets can be transferred in a matter of seconds or minutes;
- Transaction fees are very low, even for sizeable transactions, thus facilitating liquidity for secondary market sales;
- It is pseudo anonymous, so confidential data is not revealed to the public;
- It is resistant to censorship: wallet owners have full access to their accounts and third parties cannot cancel transactions or delete user accounts.
NFTs are based on ‘smart contracts’ that help artists monetize their works over its entire lifetime. NFT contracts can include royalties that are paid to select addresses every time the asset is exchanged on the secondary markets. In the past, the artist would get paid upon the first sale; now, with NFTs, he gets a cut of the sale price for eternity!
Two partner charities will receive a portion of the auction’s revenues:
The Fondation Internationale Maria Rosa Mystica, an African charity based in Côte d’Ivoire that provides essential services to children in need as well as their families;
Le Collectif 50/50, a French association of public interest that promotes diversity and equality in the French film and audiovisual industries.
After the auction, a typical Cannes afterparty will welcome up to 100 additional guests.
The gala’s guests will discover the disruptive power of blockchain technology in a legendary setting that perfectly embodies the subtle balance between the timeless charm of tradition and the spectacular display of innovation.
