BRICS: A New Geopolitical Dynamic Ahead of the 2024 Summit

The BRICS organization, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is about to enter a new geopolitical and economic dynamic on a global scale. As the 2024 summit approaches, the growing interest of other nations in joining the bloc is a sign of a new era with the addition of several countries.

A Strategic Opening to New Members

The BRICS enlargement, which will include countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran on 1 January 2024, is a response to the changing dynamics of the contemporary world. This decision, taken at the Johannesburg summit in August 2023, was hailed as a significant step towards creating a more representative bloc of developing countries.

By integrating these new nations, the BRICS seek to strengthen their influence on the international scene, while promoting a multipolar world order that challenges Western domination, especially that of the United States and the dollar. The arrival of these new members could also allow BRICS to diversify their economies and create synergies between countries with complementary resources and markets.

The Challenges of a Diverse Alliance

However, the enlargement of the BRICS is not without challenges. The diversity of interests and political systems of new members could complicate decision-making within the group. For example, the tense relations between certain countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, could create friction. Moreover, China’s economic dominance within the BRICS could raise concerns among other members who might fear a loss of influence.

The BRICS will also have to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape, marked by growing rivalries between major powers. The ability of the bloc to unite around common goals will be crucial for its future success. Managing internal differences and defining a coherent vision will be major issues at the 2024 summit.
