Hong Kong's Hang Seng stock index lost some feathers at the start of the week. On Monday, the major Chinese index lost 0.95% or 228 points. Shares in Tencent, Alibaba, Xiaomi and BYD all struggled today.
Tencent Hong Kong shares
Tencent shares (ISIN: KYG875721634) fell slightly again today. In all, Tencent shares lost 0.22% of their value in Hong Kong, equivalent to a loss of 1 Hong Kong dollar (HKD). The stock thus continues its negative phase, which has now lasted for almost two weeks at the start of this week.
Tencent shares got off to a better start in Frankfurt. It was still up 0.75%, but this was not enough to offset the losses of the past few days. Overall, Tencent shares have lost 9.23% of their value since November 17.
Alibaba Hong Kong shares
By contrast, Alibaba shares fared better in Hong Kong. It gained 0.70% or HKD 0.90. Alibaba shares (ISIN: US01609W1027) have also been on a downward trend since mid-November. However, the downward curve for Alibaba shares has flattened significantly recently.
Today, the Chinese online retailer's stock is also on the rise in Frankfurt trading. Alibaba shares are currently up 0.59%. In view of the fact that last Friday was Black Friday, during which not only US retailers, but also many online retailers, attract crowds of customers with discounts, Alibaba's share performance was, however, rather disappointing.
BYD Hong Kong shares
BYD shares ended the day slightly higher in Hong Kong. Compared with the previous day's close, the stock was up 0.066%, equivalent to just HKD 0.20. Unlike Tencent and Alibaba shares, last week went relatively well for BYD. Admittedly, the stock didn't shine with any particular gains. But losses were at least sharply limited.
In Frankfurt, BYD shares (ISIN: CNE100000296) have surprised so far. Currently, the share price is up almost 4 percent, making BYD one of the day's winners. Analyst expectations remain positive. Currently, 18 out of 20 price watchers recommend buying BYD shares. Renowned investor Warren Buffett recently strengthened his position in the Chinese conglomerate, which now occupies seventh place in Buffett's portfolio.
