Meta unveils LLaMA 2, the new AI model in partnership with Microsoft

In an already highly competitive artificial intelligence market, Meta recently announced the release of LLaMA 2, its large open-source language model. The latter was developed in partnership with Microsoft and is in direct competition with the OpenAI GPT-4. Users can now enjoy free of charge this new generative AI for commercial and research uses.

A strengthened partnership with Microsoft

At Microsoft’s Inspire event, Meta chose to highlight its collaboration with the American giant. In addition to the joint development of LLaMA 2, Meta also expressed support for Azure and Windows. The partnership goes even further with the announcement of the support of Azure Cognitive Services, which facilitates access to pre-trained and customized models for developers.

Compete OpenAI with an open-source approach

By making LLaMA 2 open-source, Meta wants to expand its scope and offer an alternative to the famous OpenAI GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing. This decision could shake the market for generative artificial intelligence by giving free access to advanced and efficient technology.

Collaboration with Qualcomm for use on various devices

In addition to Microsoft, Meta also announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to optimize the execution of LLaMA 2 on various media such as smartphones, laptops and headsets. This alliance aims to make generative AI applications accessible independently and privately on devices with sufficient computing power.

Promising prospects for the use of LLaMA 2

By 2024, thanks to the partnership between Meta and Qualcomm, users will be able to enjoy the features offered by LLaMA 2 without the need for a constant Internet connection. This technical progress could transform the way we interact with generative artificial intelligences.

  • Improved user experience: Using LLaMA 2 directly on a device will allow for smoother and faster interaction with generative AI applications.
  • Easier access to data: Developers will be able to further customize their pre-trained templates by leveraging local or online data without going through an external platform.
  • Better data protection: By processing information directly on the device, users will benefit from increased security and respect for their privacy.

An expanding artificial intelligence market

The AI market is growing rapidly and is expected to account for several hundred billion dollars a year in the coming years. Faced with this opportunity, tech giants have massively invested in the sector to try to take a slice of the cake.

With LLaMA 2, Meta is upsetting the balance by offering a free generative AI for individuals and businesses, including in a commercial use setting. This decision could redistribute the cards in this very lucrative market and give rise to new and increasingly efficient technological developments.

By unveiling LLaMA 2, Meta confirms its desire to impose itself on the market of generative artificial intelligences. Through its partnerships with Microsoft and Qualcomm, the company intends to democratize access to this technology by making it open-source and integrating it directly on various devices. It remains to be seen how these announcements will influence the competitive landscape of AI in the coming years.
