Ethereum prepares to quadruple its processing capacity

The Ethereum ecosystem could reach a major technical milestone with a proposal to quadruple its gas limit. If adopted, this development would mark a strategic turning point in improving network performance, already under pressure from growing demand from users and decentralized applications.

An ambitious development in the making

  • An unprecedented increase: Network developers plan to increase the gas limit per block from 30 million to 150 million units. This adjustment aims to significantly increase the number of transactions processed per second, paving the way for improved flow and potentially lower fees.
  • Planned integration in a future update: This change would be integrated into a future version of the protocol, currently in testing. It is part of Ethereum’s broader roadmap towards a more robust infrastructure capable of supporting mass adoption.

Between performance and balance

  • Improving the user experience: A higher gas limit would relieve network congestion during periods of high activity, reducing validation times and the high fees that penalize users.
  • A test for the ecosystem: This scaling up will require Ethereum clients and validators to adapt to larger blocks. The issue of centralization resurfaces: only the most powerful nodes would be able to keep up, which risks weakening the network’s resilience.
  • Close monitoring required: The change still needs to be tested in real-world conditions. It could reveal unforeseen flaws or logistical constraints in operators’ infrastructures.

Analysis: A bet on scaling up

This proposal is part of an aggressive approach. Faced with competition from other, faster blockchains, Ethereum is seeking to prove that it can scale without compromising its core values. But this technical choice is not without risk. It is now necessary to ensure that increased capacities do not weaken decentralization or create new technical bottlenecks.
