Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a revolutionary technology that transforms the way users interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Based on a decentralized domain name system, ENS facilitates the use of addresses by replacing them with readable names. The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is based on a decentralized domain name system based on the Ethereum blockchain. Its goal is to convert complex alphanumeric addresses into domain names that are easy to read and remember. For example, instead of using a long string of characters for an Ethereum transaction, it is possible to send funds to an address in the form “john.eth”. ENS operates with a hierarchical domain name system, similar to the Domain Name System (DNS) of the traditional Internet. ENS domain names are composed of subdomains managed by their owners, allowing complete flexibility to create custom subaddresses. In addition, ENS is not limited to address conversion: it also allows metadata and other information to be associated with a domain name.
Ethereum Name Service was initially developed within the Ethereum Foundation before becoming an independent organization in 2018. The project is led by Nick Johnson, a former software engineer at Google and the Ethereum Foundation. The ENS team is made up of nine people and its treasury is managed by a 4-7 multi-signature system, meaning that at least four of the seven signatories must approve large transactions. Signatories include influential figures in the blockchain world, such as Sergey Nazarov (Chainlink), Dan Finlay (Metamask), and Jason Carver (Ethereum Foundation). Despite the absence of direct investors, ENS is supported by major players like the Ethereum Foundation, Binance_X, Chainlink and Protocol Labs. This support allows ENS to continue its development without compromise and to continually improve its functionalities.
Additionally, ENS is not limited to Ethereum. It can be integrated with other blockchains aENS plays a vital role in simplifying the user experience on the Ethereum blockchain. By replacing long addresses with readable names, it facilitates transactions and reduces the risk of errors.
